Back to black, right down to t

Byline: Emily Woodrow                                                                      CATHERINE ZETA-JONES is no stranger to stepping out onto the red carpet in elegant, demure gowns, but the Hollywood actress gained attention for a completely contrasting look this week.                              Not satisfied with donning just a black outfit coupled with a black hat and sunglasses combination, the 39-year-old went all out at Los Angeles' international airport with 11 different black accessories - cutting a very gothic-inspired figure.                              The surprising new look for the mother of two shows just how commercialised gothic has become, said experts, who believe her choice may now inspire older women to try the style.                                           It consisted of black pounds 400 Christian Louboutin shoe-boots, black Chanel handbag, black leggings over black tights, black sunglasses, black necklace, black top and skirt, black nail varnish, plus a black fur-trimmed coat and a black, floppy, 60s-style hat - a tip of the hat to this season's retro hippy look too.                              Styling and artist director Rachel Holland said last night: "I do think it will encourage older women to dress slightly out of the mould as she has.                              Older women are now ageing a lot better and hopefully this will show them that they can still have fun with fashion and experiment.                              "Take Dita Von Teese, pictured, for example.    Porcelain Bangle                           She is someone who has her very own individual, gothic style and looks fabulous."                              Although Zeta-Jones' all-in-black, gothic appearance - traditionally seen on rebellious teenagers - may come as a shock, it would appear it is becoming more de rigueur in the world of fashion.                              Design history lecturer at West Wales School of the Arts, Stewart Roberts, said goth originated on the street but has since been converted into the mainstream by the fashion houses.                                     Gareth Pugh's catwalk designs this season were the epitome of goth.  Custom Cufflinks                             MrRoberts told the Western Mail: "Just look at how popular skull-covered scarves have become.                              "Black has always been popular because it goes with anything - hence the little black dress.                              "It does have different connotations though. It can make you look sophisticated but on the other hand it can be portrayed quite negatively as it's associated with death."                              Anglesey fashion designer Anna Coleman, of Instant Vintage Designs, said bands like Marilyn Manson and Nine Inch Nails have made goth culture more mainstream because music culture runs parallel with fashion.                              She said: "It's a similar story with tattoos. They used to be associated with just certain categories of people but now everyone wants one.                              "A designer recently played on the gothic look on the catwalk by dressing his models all in black, giving them black bob haircuts and making them wear black lipstick and this pushed a huge trend for black make-up and hair."                              MsColeman said wearing black clothes and accessories carries advantages, suggesting the Oscar-winning star of Chicago, accompanied at LAX airport by 64-year-old husband Michael Douglas on Thursday, was doing one of two things - trying to remain incognito or making a statement.                              She said: "Black makes you look thinner and also makes you feel sexy. You can also use black to either blend into the background or stand out from the crowd.
