Bad side of night out on displ

Bouncers, by John Godber, directed by Hugh Neill of Theatre Alive, Nelson. The Playhouse, last night. Reviewed by Paula Cunniffe. --------------------                                                                        John Godber's '80s play Bouncers, set in the UK, looks at the harsh realities of door life and scenarios leading up to, during and after club hours by its patrons.                                Designed around minimal props, four men play more than 20 characters (including women) between them, allowing only voice and body language - and a handbag - to mark the character transitions between the rapid scene changes.                        Gucci Wallet Handags Replica         Behind the deadpan presence required in the occupation, seasoned doorman Eric (played by Mike Williams) has jolts of reality with his speeches in between the play's shocking humour.                                             His sober character reveals his second broken marriage, the loneliness of working nights, felt in the void of daylight hours, and the tragic antics witnessed in full view during pub hours. Also, the tenderness of a father's care for the young girls who experiment too soon with adulthood.                                Judd (Troy Warring) and Les (Cameron West) constantly lose the battle to suppress the rage of the hormones, flipping from friendly camaraderie to hostility at the slightest offence, and their eagerness to find a girl from the ugly pickings at 3am. Eddie Mann is Ralph, Coach Oblate Bag Handbags the youngest of the four bouncers, and I must say he also plays a great woman.                                It was all rude, crude and vulgar, and I loved it every minute of it. Probably because it was so real.                                But, mixed with cliched humor, Godber gets away with its overt sexist predominance from both the men and the women portrayed.                                Its not often that
embroidered patches a woman gets to see the beliefs behind men's facade of friendliness, drinks and a dance. Maybe romantics shouldn't attend, or maybe they should, for a reality check for their dating woes. You'll see that the behaviours of 25 years ago haven't changed much - they've just been given names that somehow make them more acceptable.                                Bouncers confirms for me what I've sensed for a long time about the male psyche, and for that I am grateful.                                I took my 17-year-old daughter along and, worried she might be scarred for life, she tells me, "I knew they were like that already" - and in the same breath, she adds, with a twinkle in her eye, "'But that Eddie Mann is so cute!".
